Azores, Portugal Delta Vacations Packages
Explore The Azores, Portugal
In the north Atlantic Ocean, 800 miles west of Portugal, sit nine breathtaking islands, the Azores — Sao Miguel, Santa Maria, Terceira, Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, Graciosa, Flores and Corvo. Abounding with adventure, the remote archipelago extends more than 320 miles, with each island possessing its own dramatic landscape and distinctive, charming character. The Azores’ world-leading sustainable tourism and award-winning natural parks and marine reserves provide an unspoiled landscape that’s perfect for unique and unforgettable experiences. It’s the ultimate destination for vacationers seeking to discover life’s true essence in pristine surroundings.
The Azores are easy to travel to from North America, but far enough away from the stress and busyness of everyday life. This archipelago of nine islands offers the ultimate settings for scuba diving, whale watching, sailing and more. The largest, most populated island is Sao Miguel, known as The Green Island, because of its award-winning Terra Nostra Park. From thermal baths and sputtering hot springs to beautiful gardens and placid crater lakes, natural wonders abound in every direction.

Ponta Delgada is Sao Miguel’s largest city, a perfect base for trips to the other islands, and home to historic monuments and cobblestone streets that are interlaced with a modern marina, oceanfront cafes, lively bars and one-of-a-kind boutiques. Try the popular, traditional, local dish cozido (meat and vegetable stew) that’s cooked in the soil’s geothermal heat for seven hours. Venture outside the city for a dip in the Caldeira Velha Waterfall’s natural pool. Take a hike in the Lagoa de Fogo Nature Reserve, where you can visit Europe’s oldest working tea plantation.
One of the best-kept secrets of Sao Miguel is Ribeira Grande Beach — fast becoming a surfing mecca where powerful, consistent waves host annual international competitions.
Spend time sailing between the islands, exploring sheltered marinas, beaches, crater lakes and grottos, while admiring wildlife and whales. For trekking enthusiasts, take time to climb Pico Island’s volcanic crater that soars 7,713 feet, and is known as the Roof of the World. From here you will have a stunning view of the Faial and Sao Jorge Islands.
Home to fantastic sub-aquatic settings, diving aficionados will find amazing coastal formations, excellent water visibility and temperature and a variety of fish and marine mammals. Big-game fishing is another draw along the coasts of these mesmerizing islands. No matter where you choose to explore, be sure to enjoy the unique gastronomy of the region, as well as the folklore, culture and local handicrafts.
For added fun and adventure, add an activity to your package, such as a full-day bike and canoe excursion, a whale watching tour or a full-day visit to Santa Maria Island.
